New San Francisco Bay Bridge
Bay Bridge under construction
The new Bay Bridge’s self-anchored suspension span takes shape on Friday morning Nov. 2, 2012 in San Francisco, Calif. where the 525-foot tall tower gets most of the attention. But the anchorage of the main suspension cable, nearly hidden in the road bed 200-feet above San Francisco Bay is equally an engineering marvel. The critical structure, key to the span’s ability to hold its 77.6 million ton weight, reveals itself as a slight budge in the bridge’s profile east of the tower.
